The joys of parenthood are seemingly endless. The unconditional love. The look of sheer
happiness they have when they learn something new. The pride in watching their
accomplishments. And then there are the gifts they bring you from school,
like disease. Yes, last week, just one day after my son Gabe’s fourth
birthday party, he turned into a vomit fountain. Just like While the stomach flu is one evil foe, there are of
course the normal villains out there just like every season- colds, flu and
the like. There are precautions and
preparations you can take to minimize your chances of contracting these
dreaded maladies. Wash your hands:
Just like your Mama told you. Wash your hands every chance your get,
especially after a workout. Keep it Clean: If you work with a
sick person or even one you suspect might be, do not share things like the
phone, pens (people tend to put pens in their mouth) or other office
supplies. If you have to share use a
handi-wipe or spray it down with Windex or something. Keep all frequently used surfaces and door
knobs clean while you are at it. Keep Your Hands Out of Your Face: You could live in
a plastic bubble and germs could still get in. But the best chance a germ has of getting
in you is if you deliver it to one of the holes on your face. So keep your hands away. Toss it: I never understood the whole handkerchief
thing. Why the hell would you want to
save your boogers for later? Just grosses me out. Anyway, use the disposable
kind. The ones with lotion are
awesome. Use it, toss it, wash your hands. Use Your Elbow: If you have to sneeze, do it into your
inside elbow or shoulder, not your hands, to avoid spreading viruses and
bacteria. Fresh & Clean: If spreading germs
by hand was not enough, some germs can hang around in stagnant air. Open a window and let the fresh air in. Zinc It: If the above measures do not keep you safe,
have some zinc as a stand by. At the
first sign of an oncoming cold start taking zinc. Certain forms of zinc have been shown to
redcue the life of a cold by half. My
personal experience has been great.
Every time I have used it I have managed to knock it out in a few days
while others I knew where not so lucky. There are many brands out there but
the brand I use is Cold-Eeze,

Flavored
coffee drinks may be delicious, but did you know that they are bursting with

is eating them at the office meeting, why shouldn’t you? The truth is that

sugar. Yikes, talk about a set up for weight gain. Stick with water and kiss

response to my jogging suggestion was ‘I
have bad joints’, then you are in luck. Swimming is one of the
best aerobic activities you can do, and it is impact-free. When you swim you
recruit your entire body, a process which requires lots of energy—AKA
calories.
If you are
like most people I know, then you probably get a hankering for something
sweet after dinner. While your first instinct may be to reach for a cookie or
a bowl of ice cream, why not consider what nature has to offer? Fruit is
sweet, natural and lower in calories than baked goods.
Don’t
think that all calorie burning has to take place in a gym. Vacuuming,
dusting, folding laundry and doing dishes—they all require a little elbow
grease, which results in calories burned. The next time your house needs a
polish, don’t grit your teeth—this means free calorie burning for you. And if you
really want to kick it up a notch and stoke those flames – hire a personal
trainer who can take you from start to finish in less time then you think.
