Josh’s Awesome Balls

INTRODUCING JOSH’S AWESOME BALLS!!!
Your balls may be good-
but my balls are AWESOME.

Just so you know, that title was suggested by a client who sampled my awesome balls. And truth be told, this is not my recipe, so they are not really my balls at all.  None the less these little suckers rock.  I got the recipe from T-Nation.com which is an incredible site you should check out.  They are simple to make, high in fiber, high in EFA’s and  protein and will satisfy your  chocolate and/or peanut butter craving. Here’s how to make them:

1 Jar natural peanut butter (organic is always best)

½  Cup ground flax seeds (flax meal)

3 Scoops Chocolate Metabolic Drive (any chocolate protein will probably work)

Mix all the ingredients in a big bowl.  Make sure you include the oil form the peanut butter, or replace it with an equivalent amount of flax seed oil. It should create a big dough-like lump.  Pinch off a little bit and roll it into a ball about half the size of a walnut or so.  It should make 30 -40 balls. Place all the balls on a cookie sheet and stick it in the freezer. This is so they do not stick together.  After an hour or so you can transfer them to a plastic container and store in your freezer. One or two after dinner hits the spot.  Enjoy.

Josh :  Oh, yours.

Stanford Fat Loss Study

I love Stanford.  It’s my home town after all.  It is actually where I wanted to go to college, then I found out how much it cost.  Anyway, I still love Stanford (as much as a Bruin can anyway.)  So the fine folks at Stanford Med conducted a study which unequivocally proved that I am really smart.  That was not the intention of the study of course, but hey who am I to argue with Stanford?

Ok, here’s the real low down:  They randomly assigned 311 overweight women (with an average age of 40) to one of 4 diets- Atkins, Zone, LEARN or Ornish diet.  The women were tracked for a period of one year.  The goal was to test the effects of diets that spanned a range in carbohydrate content from low to high. This was no rinky dink operation.  It was a 2 million dollar study that was designed specifically to mirror real life conditions. The women had to buy and prepare all their meals.  And just as in real life the compliance was not 100%.

And the cool part (the part that proves I am rally smart) is the low carb diet kicked ass.  It had almost double the fat loss of the next best diet. And that is only half the coolness- the other half is that the low carb dieters also experienced the highest benefits in terms of cholesterol and blood pressure.  That is simply outstanding.

Now to many this is not really news.  For years top trainers (hint) have used carb modification as the cornerstone of their fat loss nutrition programs.  The results can be simply incredible.  It is nice however to have a major university study back you up.  You’d think I’d get tired of always being right, but no J

You can read more about the study as well as see video clips of the researchers here: http://mednews.stanford.edu/releases/2007/march/diet.html

Can you get thin by eating Thin Mints?

You may have heard the buzz lately about Girl Scout cookies. It is that time of year again - when millions of Girl Scout cookies infiltrate homes all around the globe - but this year there has been a widely publicized change in the beloved cookies.

The trans fats have been removed.

That's right, each shiny box of Thin Mints, Carmel deLites and Peanut Butter Patties will be stamped with a "Zero Trans" label. And just like that, the Girl Scouts get major press on how "health conscious" they are...just like the pastries at a certain coffee chain and even a major US city (New York).

So let's address the real issue at hand: Does the removal of trans fats make food healthy?

Here's the short answer: No

Sorry to burst your bubble there, but you deserve to know the truth. Yes, trans fats are unhealthy. Yes, trans fats have been proven to be of no use or benefit to your body. Yes, trans fats have been linked to an increase in heart disease.

Bottom line: trans fats are bad.

But simply removing trans fats from an unhealthy food item doesn't magically make that item healthy. A cookie is a cookie is a cookie. It is still loaded with sugar and saturated fat with the main ingredient being empty calories.

I'm not telling you this to discourage you from supporting the Girl Scouts. I'm telling you this to keep you from the disillusion that the media tries so hard to harness you with.

Eating Thin Mints won't make you thin - not even "Zero-Trans" Thin Mints.

So where does this leave you? My desire is that you will approach the "news" about trans fats and other "health" developments with a discerning eye. Yes, it would be great if scientists created a junk food that really was good for our health and made us thin - but we would be foolish to believe it.

There is only one way to a healthy and fit body, and that is through proper eating and regular exercise. It isn't a trendy solution or a ‘news worthy' discovery, but the fact is that it works every time.

Wouldn't you like to take control of your body once and for all? I have a secret for you...it isn't going to be as hard as you think. Good habits are just as addictive as bad ones. Once you begin your journey towards a fitter, healthier, sexier you, nothing will stop you from achieving your goal.
