It took me a while to realize it, but there is a true path to ultimate health. That way is through vegetarianism. I fought it for as long as I could, and as corny as it sounds I have seen the light. All the nutrients we need as humans can be found in plant versions that are as good or better for optimal health. I have made a pledge to only consume only products that have been in no way related to once living beings. This includes animal derivates as well, such as dairy and eggs. I have not yet, but will soon also rid my wardrobe of any leather and animal based items. Simply put I now believe there is no justification for the use of animal products in any way shape or form. I am thoroughly looking forward to this simpler, healthier lifestyle. -Joshua Carter

Everyone in the fitness industry is talking about the film “300”. It is Hollywood’s take on the story of 300 Spartans defending themselves from tens of thousands of Persian invaders. If you haven’t heard of this film, you have been living in a cave. The film is impressive on many fronts. For one, it was shot entirely on green screen in a giant studio –not on location. Second, it only cost $65 million, yet made $70 million it’s opening weekend domestically. But the most impressive aspect of the film is insanely good shape the actors are in.A week or so ago, my wife and I headed to the theater to check out “300.” This is a big deal for us, as we are pretty much home bodies. Since having kids our trips to the movies are few and far between. We must choose the film we see very carefully. If it sucks I will be pissed. So I was thrilled when the movie kicked ass . It is just my kind of thing- big time action sequences and manly men being all manly and kicking the crap out of each other with swords and spears. Turns out there was a plot too - who knew? The special effects were absolutely amazing. One thing I can tell you with absolute certainty is the shape these guys were in was no special effect, which finally brings me to my point. There were 300 of these guys, and all of them had six packs. That’s 1800 abs. Call Guinness, I think that is a record for most abs on screen. If you go to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w6Eyg32W4aE you can see a video on how hard these guys trained. And here is the secret to their training: there’s no secret. These guys busted their collective asses for months on end, and for up to 6 hours per day. And they did it right too. They alternated upper and lower body movements, kept the rest intervals very short and always varied the program. Sound familiar? Well if you have ever followed any of my programs it should. I will say these guys did use some very cool tools, like giant tires, kettlebells and rings. I’m going shopping later J. So what’s my point? My point is anyone can get in shape with 6 hours per day to spend. If you cannot get in great shape working out 6 hours per day then you just suck. It was their JOB to look great, and they certainly did. But that is what they were getting paid for. (The same goes for the folks on television’s “The Biggest Loser.”) The star of “300”, Gerard Butler was so burnt out after filming he did not go back to the gym for almost an entire year. But that is neither here nor there. Am I saying it is easy when you have all that time– hell no. I’m saying it must be nice to have that kind of time to dedicate to a fitness routine. This is my life and I do not have that kind of time. But it can be done in less time – much less time. Sure you can get ripped in 6 hours per day. But you can get absolutely ripped in less than 6 hours per week. It’s true, I have seen it happen. But it takes dedication. A commitment to yourself. Like I said, I love the philosophy of the training methods used by the 300 actors. Here is my time efficient take on a “300” workout you can use 3 times per week for 2 weeks that will definitely shred you up. It will take less than 30 minutes total. Definitely a Spartan routine. Spartan Full Body For 10 minutes alternate between these 2 moves with as little rest as possible. A1. Bodyweight Squats x 15 reps A2. Inverted Rows x 12 reps Rest 2 minutes then for 10 minutes alternate between these 2 moves with as little rest as possible. B1. Jumping Lunges x 12 reps B2. Push ups x max reps (as many as you can do) You're done in less than 30 minutes- Now go vomit. Until next time,
