Vegetarianism:  The Only Way to True Health

It took me a while to realize it, but there is a true path to ultimate health.  That way is through vegetarianism. I fought it for as long as I could, and as corny as it sounds I have seen the light.  All the nutrients we need as humans can be found in plant versions that are as good or better for optimal health.  I have made a pledge to only consume only products that have been in no way related to once living beings.  This includes animal derivates as well, such as dairy and eggs.  I have not yet, but will soon also rid my wardrobe of any leather and animal based items.  Simply put I now believe there is no justification for the use of animal products in any way shape or form.   I am thoroughly looking forward to this simpler, healthier lifestyle.

“300” The Workout

Everyone in the fitness industry is talking about the film “300”.  It is Hollywood’s take on the story of 300 Spartans defending themselves from tens of thousands of Persian invaders.  If you haven’t heard of this film, you have been living in a cave. The film is impressive on many fronts.  For one, it was shot entirely on green screen in a giant studio –not on location. Second, it only cost $65 million, yet made $70 million it’s opening weekend domestically.   But the most impressive aspect of the film is insanely good shape the actors are in.A week or so ago, my wife and I headed to the theater to check out “300.”  This is a big deal for us, as we are pretty much home bodies. Since having kids our trips to the movies are few and far between.  We must choose the film we see very carefully. If it sucks I will be pissed. So I was thrilled when the movie kicked ass .  It is just my kind of thing- big time action sequences and manly men being all manly and kicking the crap out of each other with swords and spears.  Turns out there was a plot too - who knew?  The special effects were absolutely amazing. One thing I can tell you with absolute certainty is the shape these guys were in was no special effect, which finally brings me to my point.

There were 300 of these guys, and all of them had six packs.  That’s 1800 abs. Call Guinness, I think that is a record for most abs on screen.  If you go to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w6Eyg32W4aE you can see a video on how hard these guys trained. And here is the secret to their training: there’s no secret.

These guys busted their collective asses for months on end, and for up to 6 hours per day.  And they did it right too.  They alternated upper and lower body movements, kept the rest intervals very short and always varied the program.  Sound familiar? Well if you have ever followed any of my programs it should.  I will say these guys did use some very cool tools, like giant tires, kettlebells and rings. I’m going shopping later J.

So what’s my point?  My point is anyone can get in shape with 6 hours per day to spend.  If you cannot get in great shape working out 6 hours per day then you just suck.  It was their JOB to look great, and they certainly did. But that is what they were getting paid for.  (The same goes for the folks on television’s “The Biggest Loser.”) The star of “300”, Gerard Butler was so burnt out after filming he did not go back to the gym for almost an entire year.  But that is neither here nor there.  Am I saying it is easy when you have all that time– hell no. I’m saying it must be nice to have that kind of time to dedicate to a fitness routine.  This is my life and I do not have that kind of time. But it can be done in less time – much less time.

Sure you can get ripped in 6 hours per day. But you can get absolutely ripped in less than 6 hours per week. It’s true, I have seen it happen. But it takes dedication.  A commitment to yourself.

Like I said, I love the philosophy of the training methods used by the 300 actors.  Here is my time efficient take on a “300” workout you can use 3 times per week for 2 weeks that will definitely shred you up.  It will take less than 30 minutes total.  Definitely a Spartan routine.

Spartan Full Body
5 minute warm up

For 10 minutes alternate between these 2 moves with as little rest as possible.

A1. Bodyweight Squats x 15 reps

A2. Inverted Rows x 12 reps

Rest 2 minutes then for 10 minutes alternate between these 2 moves with as little rest as possible.

B1. Jumping Lunges  x 12 reps

B2. Push ups x max reps (as many as you can do)

You're done in less than 30 minutes- Now go vomit.

Until next time,

Can You Think Yourself Fit?

Wouldn't it be great if we could attain the body of our dreams just by thinking about it? What if I told you that your mind actually plays the most important role in your success in getting fit? Sounds crazy, but it's true...

Our subconscious mind has one all-important job, and it succeeds every time. What is this job? To prove that your beliefs are true. Note the wording here: To prove that YOUR BELIEFS are true. Not to point out what is actually true. Nope, though what a difference that would make.

Your beliefs are the truth for your life. It is that simple. Whether or not these beliefs are in fact true doesn't matter. If you believe something to be true, then your subconscious mind will perceive the universe around you in such a way that makes this belief true.

Here's an example, if you believe that in general people like you then when you meet a new person your subconscious will point out reasons why this person does indeed like you. You will interpret their smile and handshake in a different way than someone who has the belief that no one likes them.

So how does this relate to your fitness level?

If you have the belief that getting in shape is hard, that eating healthy is boring, or that weight loss is elusive then you will find getting in shape to be very difficult. If you think of yourself as a fat person, or an out-of-shape person, or just an average person then your subconscious mind will do everything in its power to keep you that way.

Wow - isn't that amazing? Take a minute to let that sink in.

The great thing about our subconscious mind is that we can train it to work for us instead of against us. All we have to do is change our belief.

I'm sure you have heard the term "Believe and Achieve" - many schools have this painted on their walls and it is even printed on T-shirts. Well, the concept is absolutely true and when applied can bring success to your door faster than you thought possible.

It won't help if you simply think that it 'isn't impossible' or that 'it could happen someday.' These aren't true beliefs.

In order to have your desired result you need to truly believe with every fiber of your being that you will achieve this goal. If you are overweight then close your eyes and picture yourself fit. If you have fifty pounds to lose then think of yourself as fifty pounds lighter.

You will always be what you believe yourself to be.

I have to admit something...I believe that everyone who comes to me can and will get into the best shape of their lives. This belief is so strong that most often my clients also begin to believe in themselves, and amazing results are achieved.

What proof? Call me or come in today to get started on a personalized fitness plan that will change your shape and improve your quality of life. I believe in you - now it's your turn.

Take the first step by contacting me today – Because whether you believe you can or you can't... you'll always be right.

Be Informed!

Make it a habit to read nutrition labels while grocery shopping. Look at the calories per serving, fat per serving, carbohydrates per serving and protein per serving. Many foods seem similar to one another, but a quick comparison of nutritional content will show otherwise.

Fruity Yogurt Pops

BurgerAlmost everyone I know loves a nice bowl of ice cream every now and then - and for some now more often than then. This recipe is great to have as a healthier option to traditional fat-laden frozen treats. You will still find your sweet tooth satisfied without the guilt setting in later. Try it with your favorite flavor of yogurt. Yields: 10 servings.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups (16 ounces) reduced-fat strawberry yogurt
  • 1 can (8 ounces) unsweetened crushed pineapple
  • 1 Tablespoon honey
  • 2 to 3 drops red food coloring, optional

Instructions

  1. In a food processor or blender, combine the yogurt, pineapple, honey and food coloring if desired; cover and process until smooth.  Pour 1/4 cupfuls into 10 plastic molds or 3-oz. paper cups; top with holders or insert wooden sticks.
  2. Freeze until firm, about 8 hours or overnight.
